Project description

Someș Delivery is an independent project, aimed at challenging and testing the ideas of the local community, with the purpose of integrating the Someș river in the life of Cluj-Napoca city. The project’s approach is on a long term, tackling a different portion of the river each year through a multidisciplinary analysis.The project dimensions: Space It identifies the potential and the problems of each section of the river, tests temporary interventions with the goal of improving the river banks, generates public debates about the role of the Someș in the life of the city, and organizes workshops for young professionals. The interventions most utilized are kept until the autumn of each edition. Events During a chosen weekend, it activates the specific portion of the river through events, planned and adapted specifically to fit the area, in order to increase its appeal. Community It launches a contest for interventions and activities to all who are interested in applying, creates discussions with the local citizens about their relationship with the river and involves them in the activities of the project, and challenges the institutions and companies adjacent to the river bank to get involved as well. The process of learning about the local community begins early, many months ahead of the event. The research result is integrated in the Somes Expres newspaper, and serves as a base for the methods used to approach the river through the other dimensions. Environment A cleaning before the weekend of the event, workshops and presentations related to environmental issues, informs about the flora and fauna found in the area, and researches the sources pollution upstream. 2017 The third edition started from the most important aspect of the area: the smooth flow of the river, due to the flood gate located under the Garibaldi bridge. This particular aspect, unique along the city river, creates a great potential for using the Someș for recreational purposes, such as lightweight boats, located in a very popular location. Through the space related interventions, we tried to make it easy for the citizens to access the river, and to offer support for water activities to take place. 2018 Armatura Park, one the green pockets of the Someș, is located outside the mental map of the citizens of Cluj. The grassroot approach was important in this case, as the city hall has began detailing the winning project of the Re-thinking Somes contest, together with the Spanish architects team from the Practica. The biggest challenges were reactivating the park and guiding the responsible local administrations to think more about how we can better utilize the Somes.

Text description of the author

Someș Delivery represents the adaptation of the Street Delivery concept to the needs of Cluj. The team behind the project is a multidisciplinary one: several architects, an urban planner, a writer and playwright specialized on organizing events, a copywriter, an accountant, an IT developer, a designer and a photographer. They all come together with the purpose of bringing the Somes back to the attention of Cluj citizens, in a manner that can help attain the potential of the natural setting of the area. This can be achieved through future urban development or through a development strategy that better serves the needs and wishes of the city's inhabitants.
