Project description
(RE)ST – ORANGE, BLUE, GREEN . Illumination devices workshops for students The (RE)ST project stemmed from a visit to a deposit. This time, a deposit belonging to Almalux, found on Bucharest’s belt motorway. We visited a production hall for illumination devices. Any assembly line produces “waste” as well, scraps and pieces remnant after the assembling, cutting and wrapping processes are completed. In the same place one can also find long shelves jammed with different components and various illumination devices about to be commercialized. To put it simply, everything that could be used as didactic material for a practical course about object design was already gathered up in a single place. Knowing this, an idea came up. The idea to organize a series of workshops with U.A.U.I.M. students, using the pieces provided by Almalux and under the supervision of technicians from the factory. During these workshops, it was common for the components to be used for different purposes than the ones that they were initially meant for. These mutations were the source of the most interesting prototypes. Perforated plates used for suspended ceilings became wall lights, structural systems became filters and vice versa. The available materials were different during each workshop. Same categories, different characteristics and dimensions. This way, we made sure that neither the tutors, nor the participants would propose similar devices, thus establishing routine. The idea of an open laboratory was preferred to that of a standard-prototype kind of workshop. Even from the get-go, one of the workshop’s main goals was to exclude any intention of “style” from the design process. We tried to emphasize the inner expression of each solution for articulating different pieces and the general optimization of the “construction”. It was never a question of “how does a lamp look like”, but rather of how to build an expressive illumination device. Rejects, failure, unsuccessful endeavors are an inherent to each project and working process. Step by step, the shape transforms until it becomes the result of a constructive system in which the nut and the cable are as evocative as the final image. The sum of all the articulation details can generate the expressiveness of an unlit lamp, just as the way in which different elements are linked together and traversed by light can define a lit device. Shadows and screws + components pieced together and suspended + mechanics and electricity – workshop subjects.
