Medisprof Cancer Center is located outside Cluj-Napoca's city center, in a historical industrial area. Situated simultaneously within a natural and a complex industrial landscape, it has quick acces to the airport, tram and bus lines and the city ring road. With its' compact “C” shaped architectural volume embracing the courtyard, the clinic stands out elegantly from a distance. The building roots itself two levels underground and rises in one simple volume, three levels above ground. Thanks to the buildings interior glass walls the eye can easily pierce through from a distance, inviting people to discover the simbiotic relationship between the interior spaces and the landscape. The Cancer Center is designed to integrate both the brick laced industrial identity and the location's landmarks in a complex facade marked by ondulated metal sheets and piping, reminiscent of old factories. The sheets are carefully designed to come together in a way inspired by romanian folk graphic patterns. Each level is set up as one of the five major complementary departments: radiotherapy, imaging, ambulatory and farmacy, chemotherapy and at the top level administration, properly structured to include all necessary rooms for a high quality medical service. The floors are provided with wide hallways and stairs, generous waiting areas and spacious treatment rooms. The ground floor provides a large reception space, shared with a farmacy and a bakery, and a broad view of, and acces towards the courtyard. The project is structured around the bunker's massiveness and the conversion of its rooftop into a green courtyard. Most interior spaces connect to the courtyard for its beauty and sunlight. Natural light is one of the most important factors for a therapeutic and healing environment, inspiring the design of the lightwell at the first underground level. The diagonal concrete structure of the lightwell converts into a seating space at ground floor, giving a warm welcoming design to the reception space. Colors animate the medical departments receptions, providing guidance from ground floor. The signaling is represented through a geometric coloured shape placed on the resin flooring and through colored arrows composed on glass-brick walls. In addition, figurative drawings painted on walls, classic living room furniture and handmade lighting objects complete the familiar atmosphere of the clinic. Arhitecti Udrea was founded in 2013 by architect Iulia Udrea. Active members of the firm until 2016, were architects Eduart Chirilă and Bogdan Gavriliu. The partnership with Mara Oprea started in 2016 and it grew concurrent with the Medisprof Cancer Center project. Due to this being a family project, with an important contribution in the national medical field, we have been actively and emotionally engaged through the duration of the project. Our great gain has been the professional satisfaction gained and the energy, strength and added creativity accumulated and further exploited in other projects. Over time, we have come to know each other very well, to devote ourselves and to support each other. In fact, we became a team; the naivety of one is offset by the realism of the other, the practical sense is counterbalanced with a touch of sensitivity, and creativity is always sustained by spontaneity. New projects are always provocative and are keeping our minds active.
