Project description
The "iron-axis house", code TM-II-mB-06124, is an emblematic monument of the history of Timisoara, having in the niche on the corner the axle of the triumphant wagon in which Prince Eugene of Savoy entered the city victorious in 1716. The building is in the historical district of Cetate. The theme of the project-converting from residential into office building has generated a project of great complexity(Sc=3233mp).The main access was through a passage from Bratianu Sq, typical for the historical houses, which was preserved. There was a need for another penetration into the southern facade (from the courthouse), creating a new access to the yard and thus solving the second escape route. The building consists of 3 building bodies around the inner courtyard: Body1 with a gorgeous baroque wooden structure and Body2 were mansard-roofed in the volume of the existing attic with the preservation of the original frames. In Body3 the wooden structure was rebuilt, being degraded. Besides the advanced degradation of the building and bringing it to the current standards, a problem was the poor natural illumination of the courtyard and courtyard spaces. Thus an important theme has become natural light. On the 2nd floor, body 3, I proposed a new courtyard balcony of metal and glass to enhance the natural light in the yard and to continue the existing one at the body2, thus unifying the 2nd floor horizontal circulation. The lofts from the 1st and 3rd bodies are opened through large glass doors to the newly created routes. In general, the interventions from the courtyard: the windows, the elevator, various details, etc. were solved with new materials in subtle contrast to the existing ones. From a structural point of view, we chose metallic reinforcements for the wooden floors and roof structures. Existing wooden stairs in good condition have been preserved, flame retarded. A new staircase with a metallic structure and marble steps was proposed in the Body2 behind the courtyard, which is the escape staircase. The main round staircase was continued in the basement. Where we needed to undo the flooring due to the consolidations, we opted for new glass floors to see the craftsmanship of the brick masonry work below. The windows to the street and the interior doors were reconstituted after a few original ones that have been preserved. The different facades of the two bodies from the street have been unified by some decorative elements taken from one of the existing bodies.
